

The first Sussex cattle came to Lower Roundhurst almost 10 years ago although
this native breed has been grazing the land of the Weald since Norman times.
Lower Roundhurst Farm received organic status, approved by the Soil Association
in 1998. Paul Kerry has been a farmer all his life. We feel lucky to have
him at Lower Roundhurst
as his wealth of experience, expertise and his caring nature are highly regarded
in the local community.
Our Sussex cattle herd has grown steadily from the first few bought from
the Maplesden herd to
the 45 head of breeding cows we now care for. Sussex cattle, with
their rich
red glossy coats, were chosen for their fine textured meat and the ease
to which they adapt to organic conditions. They calf easily and regularly,
producing
healthy, lively calves in Spring and Autumn and are naturally non selective
grazers, efficiently converting both rich and rough pastures into milk
for their calves and superb meat for the market.
They’re a pleasure to work with having a calm, steady temperament,
a bit like Paul himself!
Moya and Richard Connell took over the farm in October 2004 and are steadily
developing Lower Roundhurst Farm finding new markets and
introducing new animals: Southdown lambs, Berkshire and Tamworth pigs,
and laying chickens have all been introduced since 2005 and a market
garden now grows all our fruit and vegetables.
Everyone at Lower Roundhurst is fully committed to the ideals of sustainable
farming and their responsibilities as stewards of the countryside.
We are delighted
to offer our customers the ability to trace the source of their food
from our fields to their plates and encourage people to visit us
and see for
