At Lower Roundhurst Farm we believe that the quality of life of our animals
has a great bearing on the quality of the meat produced.
We rear our animals naturally
and with great concern for their welfare. The Soil Association defines
health in animals as “a positive physical
and mental state” satisfying “all the animals’ needs, including
behavioural needs, not just the avoidance of cruelty”.
Organic farming produces
livestock that are robust and able to resist disease – it’s
better for them and better for us.
At the heart of our philosophy is our desire to enhance and work with natural
biological cycles. We aim for co-existence with rather than dominance over
nature.
Our cattle are left to graze on clover rich pastures for as long as possible
each year keeping their young with them for at least 10 months and
have more room per head than non-organic livestock. Our lambs and pigs also
stay in family groups and are returned to the fields or woods as soon as possible
after birth, living a life as nature intended. This
creates less stress making
them stronger, healthier, and less prone to disease and injury. No
chemicals are used on our farm and the routine use of antibiotics is prohibited,
making
life safer for our animals and for us.
Organic farming is recognised by the UK government as better for the environment
causing lower levels of pollution and improving soil fertility with natural
organic matter. Wildlife is no longer poisoned and a balanced population
of bees, butterflies, birds and wild animals is encouraged.
By farming organically at Lower Roundhurst Farm we produce beautiful, well
cared for, healthy animals in a beautiful, unspoilt, healthy environment.
